Manchester United Reveal Interim Coaching Plan After Managerial Changes
Manchester United have confirmed a new coaching structure for the remainder of the 2025–26 season following the departure of head coach Rúben Amorim.
In a move aimed at stabilising the team and giving the club time to find the right long-term leadership, United have appointed Michael Carrick as head coach until the end of the season.
Carrick, a former United midfielder widely respected by fans and players alike, steps into the position after extensive internal discussions and negotiations between club executives.
His appointment comes after Darren Fletcher served as a temporary caretaker manager in the immediate aftermath of Amorim’s exit. Fletcher has now returned to his previous role as Under-18s head coach, marking the end of his brief spell in charge of the senior team.
The decision to tap Carrick was made official on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, with the club announcing in a statement that the 44-year-old will oversee the first-team for the final 17 games of the campaign.
Carrick’s role is described as head coach rather than interim, which reflects a slight shift in phrasing — yet his contract still runs only until season’s end.
Why Carrick Was Chosen

Manchester United’s leadership, including director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada, were tasked with identifying someone who could bring unity, authority, and familiarity to a squad that has struggled for consistent form.
Carrick emerged as the preferred choice from a shortlist that included other former club figures such as Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
Sources said Carrick’s deep understanding of the club, both as a player and coach, gave him the edge in the final decision. Carrick’s connection to Manchester United runs deep.
During his 12-year playing career at Old Trafford, he made 464 appearances, winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, among numerous other honours.
After retiring in 2018, he joined the club’s coaching staff, working under managers including José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
He also had a three-game spell as caretaker boss in 2021, leading Manchester United to two wins and a draw — a rare unbeaten run in a transitional period.
More recently, Carrick gained managerial experience at Middlesbrough between 2022 and 2025, though that tenure ended after the club finished mid-table in the English Championship.
Carrick’s First Tasks and Ambitions

Stepping back into the Old Trafford dugout, Carrick has been clear about the challenge ahead.
In his first official comments as head coach, he spoke about the privilege of leading the club and his belief in the players’ abilities to perform at the standards expected by supporters.
He emphasised the need for collective focus and resilience as United prepare for a busy run of fixtures.
His first match in charge came against Manchester City in the Manchester derby, a high-pressure environment that served as an early test for his leadership which he comfortably won 2-0.
United’s league position.
Currently seventh in the Premier League — means that Carrick’s primary aim is to guide the team into European qualification, ideally securing a spot in next season’s Champions League.
One of the biggest challenges he faces is galvanising the squad after a turbulent period marked by inconsistent results and early exits from cup competitions.
The club’s focus now lies entirely on league performance, with European qualification seen as a major statement of progress under his guidance.
Backroom Support and Coaching Team

Carrick has also assembled a backroom coaching team that blends experience with familiarity.
Joining him are:Steve Holland, former England assistant manager and experienced coach.
Jonathan Woodgate, who worked with Carrick at Middlesbrough.
Jonny Evans, returning to a coaching role at the club
Travis Binnion and Craig Mawson, who continue their roles from within the club’s coaching setup.
This mix of seasoned coaches and club insiders is intended to support Carrick’s transition and help maintain continuity while also refreshing the team’s tactical approach.
What This Means for United’s Future
While Carrick’s appointment is temporary, there’s speculation about whether he could be considered for the permanent position depending on how United finish the season.
Though some pundits believe the club will pursue a big-name manager in the summer.
Rumours have linked United with high-profile candidates like Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti, and others, who could become available after international tournaments later in the year.
For now, though, the focus remains firmly on the present: steady the ship, improve results, and build momentum.
Carrick’s deep ties to Manchester United and his commitment to the job give supporters something to rally behind as the season unfolds.
