In a detailed statement, he emphasized that Mbappé used personal checks to distribute the funds, a method that—according to French law—does not require a formal declaration unless it involves tax-exempt status or specific regulatory oversight.
“This donation received for the 2022 World Cup was made by check and did not need to be declared,” Soufron stated. “It makes no sense to make a retrospective link with the interventions carried out by my client in 2023 with Mbappé during public trips.”
Soufron also insisted that the donation had no influence on the officer’s professional responsibilities, either during or after the World Cup. That clarification was crucial, as one of the issues investigators are reportedly examining is whether the money resulted in undue loyalty or extended involvement in Mbappé’s personal security beyond official duties.
A Trip to Cameroon Raises Eyebrows
The situation grew more complex after it was revealed that one of the officers involved in the donation accompanied Mbappé on a trip to Cameroon in 2023. That visit, part of the player’s cultural outreach and charity work, drew global attention. Some critics and commentators have since speculated that the officer’s presence on that trip could suggest a continuing personal relationship between Mbappé and his security detail.
Soufron again moved to dismiss these concerns. “My client’s interventions did not receive any compensation and fell within his normal role as head of security for the FFF [French Football Federation],” he explained.
Still, the fact that Mbappé’s donation involved a government-affiliated police unit—and that one recipient continued to work closely with the player after the fact—has led to greater public debate about the blurry lines between private generosity and public accountability.
